The onset of motion for oral or rectal administration varies from 20 to 60 minutes. For IM administration, the onset of action is marginally more quickly. Following IV administration, the onset of motion ranges from almost immediately for pentobarbital sodium to 5 minutes for phenobarbital sodium.
